The most expensive mistake in video production is starting to film before you know what you are making. This is how we avoid it.

Most people think video production starts with a camera. A shoot day, a crew, locations, lighting. That is what production looks like from the outside.

But that is not where good work starts. Good work starts with a question. What are we actually trying to say? What should someone feel after watching this? What is the story? Not the footage. The story.

Why going straight into production is expensive

We have seen it more than once. A brand goes into a shoot without a clear creative direction. Two shoot days, a lot of footage, and then in the edit, everyone realises nothing quite connects. Each shot is fine. The overall piece is not. There is no thread. No reason to care.

Reshooting costs money. Trying to fix it in the edit is possible, but you can always tell. The result is a video that looks professional and does nothing.

What concept direction actually involves

Concept direction is the phase where we figure out the creative idea before anything else is planned. It sits before production, before logistics, before casting or location scouts.

We look at the brand properly. We talk to the team. We ask uncomfortable questions about what makes this business actually different, not just what they say in their marketing. Then we build a creative direction around that. A tone. A visual language. A narrative structure. A way of telling the story that is specific to this brand and this moment.

Only when that is clear do we start thinking about cameras, shot lists or shoot days.

What it changes in practice

When concept direction is done properly, everything downstream gets easier. The shoot runs more efficiently because everyone on set knows what they are making. Decisions are faster. The edit flows. The client feedback is sharper because people can respond to something specific rather than trying to articulate a vague feeling.

It is the least visible part of what we do. It is also the part that changes the outcome the most.
